The first day on the job, the new Manhattan District Attorney issued a memo to assistant district attorneys outlining new prosecutorial policies of the Manhattan DA's office. The so-called Day-One Memo, among other things, essentially decriminalizes numerous offenses that some years ago no one could have thought would go unprosecuted. Will it make for a more just, equitable society, or is it our ticket into lawlessness and anarchy? If resisting arrest is not a crime, and armed robbery is equal to petit larceny, will police officers have any incentive to put themselves in harms way to prevent crimes that are not prosecutable? You be the judge.
Will NYC be a better place with these policies in place?
